World's Columbian Exposition Day of Sale Ticket 1/S
There long has been misconceptions about these tickets. Some very smart collector 40+ years ago decided that since tickets bore combinations of numbers 1 to 6 followed by various letters that the numbers represented the six months the fair was opened. Sounds like a decent guess, but not an accurate one.
A BIT ABOUT TICKETS IN GENERAL
When James Doolin published his booklet about Columbian tickets (IN 1980!) he did an excellent job of tallying in list form many tickets that the majority of collectors had never seen before.
My forthcoming book about tickets and passes will have perhaps twice the total number of tickets presented almost 45 years ago by Doolin. My enthusiasm (well, one could say obsession) as an historian, collector and seller of WCE tickets took me on a decades-long hunt for rare and previously unknown tickets. It became obvious a few years ago that I very much wanted to compile ALL of this information in book form for collectors as well as non-collectors who for many reasons have become part of the WCE community--museums, libraries and so on.
FYI, the forthcoming book on WCE tickets will include exactly how the number/letter tickets were used (per fair management, outlined in detail in the final report to the WCE Board) and a list of all the known number/letter combinations of tickets--a total of approximately TWICE the ones tallied in Doolin's guide.
Please follow me and The History Bank through 2025 for announcements about progress of the book--details, facts and figures about all aspects of tickets and passes. I am always happy to share information, and opinions, about the WCE. We can share a dialog if you send question(s) to my email at [email protected]. You can also watch for my ebay listings under "thehistorybank" or here in my online store.
If you have provided me with your email contact information I will be sure to send you updates, notes on forthcoming special events/sales so you can get the information and opportunity to bid or buy before the rest of the world.
NOTE: As you can see, this ticket is all here but got in a fight with maybe a pair of scissors years ago and got its ear dinged and still bought it with a group of tickets. It looks fine viewing the front. I couldn't see ignoring it so it's a very cheap ticket if it works for you.
POSTAGE is first class in a standard envelope without tracking for $2.00. If you want heavy cardboard in a padded envelope WITH tracking let me know, and I can change the shipping to $5.00.
