Prooflike World's Columbian Exposition So-Called Dollar NGC MS62 P/L HK231

By now you've worked your way through more than 100 WCE listings, and I hope you
have discovered just how many super WCE medals are in this sale. This portrait of Columbus looking slightly to the left of center is a very handdsome frosty slabbed mint state medal and prooflike as noted on the NGC slab.

The only price guide we can use is the 2008 supplement to the SCD 2nd edition. That book says an uncirculated example of HK231 ranges from $75-$250; and you know I've repeated my concerns about the crazy ranges in the price guide more than a few times. Everyone should use the 2008 book/guide as just that--a GUIDE!

My interpretation has been that the lowest priced BU example of a medal must be a generally drab MS60, but it is still uncirculated!

The highest valuation on many medals can be very high (in modern medals, a 69 or 70!) but in many (if not most) 100+ year-old pieces the finest graded might only be a 64 or 65. We generally have much more information for a U.S. coin vs. a medal, in part because their minted and survival numbers are VERY LOW.

If the price guide is accurate stating that the finest examples of this issue are worth about $250, I would guess it also would be ONLY a 65 or so.

So wouldn't it be nice to have a universal wholesale and retail price figure based totally on the third party s We know that could never happen. Based on the SCD price guide ($75-$250?) AND other considerations, I would put a tight WHOLESALE value on this prooflike medal at $175. ...retail ABOUT $200.

And if you factor in eye appeal and the prooflike designation, that is 1) very subjective, and 2) how much the eye appeal factor is worth to both buyer and seller our price is 20% BELOW wholesale: $139!
