Shipwreck Sale: High Grade Roman Coin of Constantine I ("The Great") 307-337AD
I have included several ancient Roman and Byzantine coins and very early British ones as well. Naturally, virtually all have been dug. Not too many would be found lying around for 2,000 years in a coin purse.
Constantine I is one of the better known Roman rulers, in power for three decades. NGC has expanded its slabbing in recent years and now provides actual grades not just authenticity and in some case grades the condition of the surfaces. If you look at the slabbed photo enlarged you can see the excellent detail on Constantine. It is especially nice and better than all but a small percentage of such coins.
The reverse is the image of a "camp gate" which I am a little vague on exactly where it would have been. It obviously wouldn't be at a military camp or camp on some type of expedition as those are all tent-type structures. The gate shown is perhaps 15-18 feet tall based on the door height and appears to be a permanent stone structure, so I assume it is a "camp" as opposed to castle or large structure. Regardless, the detail is outstanding, on both sides of the coin.
Perhaps a slab is more important on ancient coins that many others in that you have the question of authenticity (not counterfeit) confirmed, details on the emperor and date of issue/his-her reign and of course a grade.
I believe you will find that the pricing in this sale for ancient coins is very reasonable/below market. I realize it can be quite difficult to cost-compare other items, bu you can generally compare emperor, grade, design and depending on your reference materials, rarity. I have attempted to make EVERY item very attractively priced and only note the ancient coins because they are the most easily researched among what is offered here.
