1787 Spanish 1 Real Silver Coin, Metal Detector Find
Very nice 18th century Carolus one real silver coin. Not sure where it was found but in excellent condition for having been buried somewhere for a couple centuries.
As you are no doubt aware, the prices for reales increase along with the increases in denomination, although the overall increase isn't as dramatic as you find with some other coins. Perhaps this is due to the fact that so many 8 reales were struck. Often, higher denomination coins generally are more scarce due to lower mintage figures and thus are substantially more expensive.
8 reales were used in great numbers in Asia. The 8 reales or Spanish dollar is often considered the first U.S. "dollar" as it was circulated more frequently than any other coin in the first years of the U.S.
We have two very nice 8 reales in the store--one a high grade and showing no Asian chop marks; the other did circulate in Asian and has the chop marks to prove it.
We have this one real coin and several 1/2 reales as well, including two that were part of the salvage from the El Cazador "treasure ship."
