#201-CIVIL WAR SALE: OLD ABE THE EAGLE & UNION ARMY MASCOT TWO-SIDED POSTCARD
The remarkable eagle lived with the 8th Wisconsin for THREE YEARS! Three years during the Civil War, including battles, wherever the regiment went Old Abe went along.
The back of the postcard tells a bit of Old Abe's story and notes that the postcards can be purchased for 15 cents each...or ten for a dollar....or 100 for $9. with all of the proceeds from the sales being donated to the Great Sanitary Fair held in May 1865 in Chicago.
The card also noted that a book about Old Abe and his 3-year sojourn with the 8th Wisconsin was going to be published and sold at the Sanitary Fair. In my more than four decades of researching and writing about the Civil War, as well as selling Civil War artifacts, books and other publications I have never seen that book. I would assume I would've seen it advertised and for sale if it ever was completed.
Old Abe's postcard shows wear but would still display well framed, in a notebook or on displayed along with other items in a case.
Because the card has flaws at the top border, I am offering it at 1/3 off what I would ask for a clean, excellent example.
