#113-CIVIL WAR SALE: A SIGNED NOTE+2ND SIGNATURE & THE STORY OF THE WAR BY MARY LIVERMORE
Mary Livermore was one of the most influential women of her time and worked tirelessly to aid Union soldiers and to support the cause of women's rights, both difficult battles for her to fight 150+ years ago.
This lot includes the 700-page book by Livermore ("My Story of the War") that is one of the many Civil War books that belong on all American history bookshelves. Livermore was encouraged to write about her experiences during the Civil War and her work with the Sanitary Commission once the war ended, but she declined. As she said in the introduction to the book two decades later, "a horror of the war still enwrapped the country." She said that she "put away all mementoes of the exceptional life I had led, and re-entered with gladness upon the duties connected with my home and family." She never stopped her charitable work nor her literary pursuits. This book is a great recounting of her work and the war.
IMPORTANT--BE AWARE THAT THIS BOOK IS IN GREAT NEED OF REPAIR: This first edition of her book was published in 1887 and is in great need of repair. Still I could not pass up acquiring it--the first edition and with the two signed notes of Livermore's that were pasted into the boards of the book. The front and back of the hardcover book are detached completely, there is little of the spine remaining & the first and last pages are loose. But it is all here! My first thought was that I would take it to a bookbinder and have it repaired and leather covers and spine replaced; they are in too bad shape to restore/reuse. But if I did so then I would simply pass along the cost; so after consideration I thought I would leave it to a new owner to decide howthe rebound book should looke, color of the faric and leather and so on.
I suspect that some collector might just take the Livermore signed notes and detach them and frame them for display. I would find that quite reasonable since they are affixed to detached boards and could easily stand on their own once the book is rebound and repaired.
