#104-CIVIL WAR SALE: VOLUME ONE OF THE COMPLETE REPORTS OF THE U.S. SANITARY COMMISSION
I have said many times in listings throughout this sale and of course to many of my customers over many years, that I have always found the concept of the Sanitary Commission and especially the Sanitary fairs during the war interesting. They were responsible for the health and well being of tens of thousands of Union soldiers and sailors and they distributed MILLIONS OF DOLLARS of goods to soldiers in the field; and we are talking about millions of dollars in the valuation of the dollar 160 years ago!
I cannot tell you the page count of this book because it has gathered SIXTY Sanitary Commission reports and documents and those page numbers exist within the book. These reports are the ones I and others sell individually for anywhere from $25 to $100+ each, depending on the content and length. Most of the reports included here are 8-40 pages in length. The 60th document and last in this book is a 138-PAGE REPORT!
This book is in excellent condition, with the binding solid. It was published in 1866, obviously collecting the valuable material once the war was over and the Commission wisely knew that a bound book would last much longer than 60 loose reports. The first couple pages are a bit loose but still attached. It is a former library book as it is stamped "Troy Public Library." I can't tell you any more about the library as that is the extent of the identification. The inside front cover shows that the pocket that held a checkout card has been removed.
This is a great volume, a wonderful reference and research too. I found various material from the Sanitary Commission helpful in writing books about the Civil War and if l were I at a different stage in my life (i.e. younger!) in the midst of writing about the Civil War, I would not let this book leave my office. Later in this sale you will find several Civil War books I wrote and produced available at only $10 per copy, hardcover or softcover.
If the reports in this book were sold individually and averaged just $25, the 60 included would sell for a total of $1,500. And many reports (ac tually the majority!) would sell for much more. The final entry at nearly 150 pages would sell for nearly $200 by itself. I've priced it at a very reasonable $200.
