This Lot Consists of TWO Very Heavy Early Roman Spear Points
These two spear, rather than arrow, points are quite different from each other but both extremely heavy. I have included two pieces in one listing so that you could acquire them side-by-side to display both their differences and similarities.
One was made to attach to the wooden shaft with a tail or extended thinner piece of metal. The one shown has only the nub remaining of what was originally much longer. It needed to be substantial and sunk deeply into the shaft in order to make it stable. The metal had to be deep and tight enough in the shaft so that it was as solid as one piece. Certainly a Roman foot soldier wouldn't want to throw a spear that wobbled in flight and was ineffective when it struck!
The larger spear point was hollow so that the end of a wooden shaft could be inserted tightly into the point. I have included several other spear and arrow points in this sale.
Regardless of how these were used, the weight and thickness of the spear points made them an effective tool in battle despite their crude style...but remember the history and the fact that Roman soldiers were fighting to stay alive. In examining deteriorated metal to ascertain the finer points used in creating these points and their combination with the shaft can be a rough job.
Both items pictured are included in this lot for one price.
