MARKED DOWN--A Lot of THREE 18th-19th Century Recovered Dutch Coins--PRICE LOWERED!
Some have referred to these Dutch coins as "New York Pennies," because like many other national coins (Spain, England et al) they were used as circulating currency in the British colonies. After the colonies won the Revolutionary War, one of the many important tasks for the new country was to establish a U.S. Mint, which was done in 1892. So the new country did not have its own coins for the first decade and a half AFTER the thirteen independent colonies became the United States of America.
And it took many years after the opening of the mint for foreign coins to disappear completely from circulation. The most well-known and longest tenured foreign circulating coins were the famous silver pillar dollars (lovingly known as "Pieces of Eight" or "pirate money") that actually remained legal tender in the U.S. until Congress decreed that no foreign coins could be used for "payment of debts public or private" any longer.
The "VOC" coins circulated in New York as pennies for many years. In 1609 Henry Hudson and his ship the Half Moon "discovered" Manhattan Island. What was to become the State of New York was known as New Netherland and the future Big Apple was named New Amsterdam. At the time, Manhattan was home to a few scattered Indian villages and a whole lot of forest. The New Amsterdam capital encompassed only the southern tip of the island.
Sixty years later, still more than a century before the U.S. became an independent country, VOC had became the largest private company in the world.
VOC stood for Vereenigde Oostindishche Compagnie--the Dutch East India Company.
This lot in the sale is for THREE VOC coins. The first person purchasing this VOC lot will be given the choice of which coin they would like. They are dated throughout the 1700's and into the early 1800's and I would guess, for example, that many collectors might want the earliest dates--or since they're getting three, a range of different dates. They are all in comparable condition, but again, you can request the higest grade available or perhaps the one with encrustation from the ocean saltwater --or one with NO encrustation. .
We will ship them in order of whn they were purchased. We will contact the buyer or buyers to let them know what coins and in what condition are available.
We have a total of eleven Dutch coins, all of which are loose. We have THREE LOTS OF THREE available. If someone wants just a single VOC coin we would be happy create a separate lot for them.
SHIPPING: We will send your Dutch coin(s) postpaid--no charge!
