The historian and author obliged an autograph seeker in 1894. For the fan of American history and literature, a very inexpensive historical autograph AND a copy of the book published in 1888. The story, the most recognized of Hale's work, was first published in 1863 in the Atlantic magazine in the midst of the Civil War. The strong patriotic theme was clearly written to boost patriotism when the country was literally threatened with the possibility of ceasing to exist. The book is often called a short story, but novella is more accurate. It is a quick read and just 50 pages long, but has long been a staple of required school reading. Very nice and scarce autograph and early copy of the book.
