World's Columbian Expo Wellington Restaurants Ticket with Rare Overprint
The Wellington ticket is one of just a couple that show the stand number AND the name of the concession operating it; Wellington ran out of new tickets a week before the fair closed permanently. The immediate (necessary!) solution was to gather used tickets that had been collected and retrurn them to the printer....ASAP. They then overprinted a new purple ink serial number on top of the previous red number.
This specific ticket very likely was one of the used tickets that were rushed into the hands of customers, but it was NOT overstamped with a purple new number.
I hope you can see the light purple large number "3" that is overprinted perpendicular to the serial number. This is the first overprint done in this manner that I have seen. I have sold several of the purple overprints.
The question of values of such overprints is dubious. Unless somehow the marketplace is flooded with overprints they will or rather should coninue at $10-$15 more than a standard Wellington S-65 25-cent ticket.
It is interesting that Wellington accounts for several WCE tickets, but some are missing any mention of the company name, but do have an S-number. I will have a short article about Wellington along with their tickets in the WCE ticket book.
A standard S-65 25-cent ticket without the Wellington name should sell for $40-$60, while one WITH the Wellington name is generally in the $60-$80 price range.
Adding a purple reprint usually kicks up the price to around $90. These are typical retail prices I have seen/logged since the 1980s! This ticket with the "3" overprint, as the only one reported to date, should add another ~$10 to the retail asking price above.
With all this information and the desire to continue to sell below wholesale, I would consider this potentially a $100 ticket. I say potentially because I have noted many times that there are several reasons a ticket sells either higher (or lower!) than the estimate we have suggested. With all this taken into consideration. we are asking only $65 for this possibly unique ticket.
As noted throughout the sale, shipping of $2 is for first class 1 or 2 ounce untracked mail; if you want a much sturdier mailer AND tracking the shipping charge is $5. We would keep that charge at $2 or $5 if we ship the ticket alone and charge nothing additional if it ships along with another item.
