#138-CIVIL WAR SALE: TWO TOKENS WITH ONE SIDE IDENTICAL--WORTH YOUR TIME TO STUDY!
I have tried to present a large number of Civil War token in an interesting light. I decided to offer TWO CWT's together, one a storecard for a bakery (NOT Broas!) and one a patriotic with the only words just about unreadable on the pair of cannons, and "UNION" in the shield with an eagle above.
But neither token shows any wear at all, with one more red than brown, the other a nice even brown. But my interest in offering these two together is the apparent identical die used on the shield side. But looking closely there seems to be small differences in the dies. Again, armed with a high powered loupe I was surprised to find that they were actually NOT different dies, but that the die state on the mostly red side with shield and eagle was dramatically farther along in wear to the die (not wear to the token itself). You might think the redbrown (and lots of red) is superior due to the color. Study the brown version and every aspect that seems slightly different is a result of the brown token DIE being vastly superior showing far less die usage. If you weren't viewing them side-by-side you would think that the vertical lines of the shield are very different, as are the many design devices such as the wreath, stars and even the two hanging balls left and right of the shield.
Study them closely and you discover an IDENTICAL die in a very late state on the red and brown shield side. The Wallace Varietal Bakery side is very well struck as is the other side.
If these nuances do NOT interest you or drive your decision making when you purchase, then I would suggest you have 2 other reasons for your attention: 1) the brown token is very crisp and desirable, while 2) the mostly red token has desirable color which may surprise you at the wear--not of the CWT but of the die.
REMEMBER--this price is for TWO tokens.
