#123-CIVIL WAR SALE: SPECTACULAR GREAT CENTRAL SANITARY FAIR PROOF STAMP, NO DENOMINATION

This is the highlight of the Sanitary Fair proof stamps in this sale. It is on thin proofing paper, nothing on the back, and with NO denomination which would be inside the two blank circles at bottom left and right. The color is extremely rich and not the red you will see on some of these stamps. As with most stamps, color is important, and this like other regular and proof issues in this sale, colors are all just top notch--bright, no fading and with all quality of a government issued stamp at the time.

We also have a lot that consists of THREE proof stamps, all different colors, and with the same denomination on each of the stamps. I assume this was done so that they could be evaluated side-by-side. While the other stamps (that were printed on very heavy paper with blank backs, with no gum) are very rare and desirable, this stamp is rarer! The paper, the lack of a denomination and on thin proofing paper all attest to it being a very early test in the process to determine if all elements showed up as desired on the printed copy. It's a quite marvelous, possibly unique proof.
