#129-CIVIL WAR SALE: SANITARY COMMISSION APPEAL + 2nd LETTER & LIST OF DONATIONS, 4 ITEMS
This letter sounds very desperate for assistance to help Union troops--and it was only june of 1862 when it was circulated. This is a rare letter sent to a large group of women urging them to make Sanitary Fair donations. This lot contains a second document--a handwritten letter to women in Parkman, Maine, announcing a special meeting to discuss the need for items for soldiers. It also includes a long list of hand-written names and the amount of cash and/or value of articles donated. See the last of 6 photos for a portion of the list.
This lot includes the printed letter, handwritten letter, long list of names and dollar value of donations and a plain envelope in which the latter was kept.
This lot consists of four separate items, all pleading for donations to help the Union soldiers who early in the war were already in dire need. The Army couldn't begin to keep up the pace of supplying enlistees/draftees with all that they needed. And, as the war continued to rage, the government was never able to provide ample basics from socks to blankets. The women of the country were an important lpipeline to soldiers in the field, who weren't looking for extravagances...just basic necessities.
