#134-CIVIL WAR SALE: OMINOUS LOOKING SYRINGE WITH A VERY LARGE NEEDLE
While this syringe appears that it could take a replacement needle that could be used for injecting medication into a vein or a muscle, the needle as shown would seem to be what I have seen of similar medical syringes in medical andn Civil Wafr history journals used for.... Injecting into the penis to treat sexually transmitted disease during the Civil War era. Venereal disease not only infected tens of thousands of soldiers, but when completely ignored and untreated it could be fatal...but would include rather horrible pain before that point was reached.
This syringe was manufactured by Maw and Sons, London, founded in 1807. Maw was a major supplier of medical instruments to the Confederacy and many of these were said to have come with blockade-running ships that the Union tried quite hard to stop.
This is quite unsettling to look at. You could consider this as an excellent item from your Civil War collection to display prominently--and to watch the reaction of your male friends. I can't think of anyone who wouldn't be upset considering this as something to which they migh have been subjected during the war.
