#147-CIVIL WAR SALE: NEW YORK, PHILADELPHIA & OTHER WAR-DATE NEWSPAPERS
We simply don't have the room to include everything we would like to have in this sale. We have already decided that after the first of the year we will put together an inventory list of Civil War items, some that we have never offered before, some that are duplicates from this sale and others that we acquired after we had closed the door to adding more to this sale.
We do have a nice inventory of daily newspapers dated during the Civil War, complete with a variety of interesting information on battles, casualties, political figures, war heroes, etc.
This lot is ONE WAR DATED NEWSPAPER quite similar to the one shown here. There really is no substitute in history to reading it when it happened. I guarantee that the paper you receive will be very much like the edition of the Philadelphia Inquirer shown here or also could be similar to the Harper's which is for sale in the next lot. Take a moment to scan the articles on the front page--typically devoted to the most recent news of the Union army.
We generally sell these for $25-$40 each, depending on how important the news in it may be. Naturally, major event coverage is rarer...and thus more expensive. For example, we sold papers that were the first to report the assassination of Lincoln, hanging of the conspirators in the killing of Lincoln, the Monitor and Merrimac battle, and so on. These were from $100 to $500 depending on various factors. For example, the first report of the Monitor and Merrimac battle might only be a small article in a newspaper, but if it was published immediately after the battle, it would be in more demand than a week or two later when greater details were published.
We also have many papers that we used in researching one of our books about the opening of the American West. These include early California gold rush papers, general news and one, for example, reporting the shootout at the OK Corral!
THIS LOT IS FOR A SINGLE CIVIL WAR ORIGINAL NEWPAPER such as shown here. We have noted that we have a dozen papers available, so you could order muyltiples if you would like. The price is the same per newspaper and the shipping can be combined, where one paper or five can be mailed for the $6.50 charge.
Questions? As always, I do my best to provide prompt answer to general or very specific questions. Just ask!
This lot is one paper for just $15.
