#199-CIVIL WAR SALE: 1864 UNCIRCULATED, LIGHTLY TONED, OUTSTANDING LINCOLN "OK" CAMPAIGN TOKEN
This token has great eye appeal, with a great amount of red and light toning. The token has virtually NO text: Only the 1864 date on the obverse and the large "OK" on the reverse. It is a beautiful example of this design, typically found circulated and brown. This is a very popular but scarce token. Most anything related to Lincoln is always in demand, especially anything related to his presidential campaigns.
As with most Civil War tokens, you can judge the grade most easily by small areas of wear (if any) on the finer raised details of one or both sides of the token. Lincoln looks well groomed, with nothing out of place--in other words, no wear to be found.
Well-circulated examples of this token generally CANNOT be found for less than $100, and higher grades (not uncirculated (might be $200+. This example is gorgeous and the nicest I've been able to find. They may not be rare but they are scarce and one in this condition can typicallly sell for $400-$500 and more. We were very fortunate to be able to purchase it for a reasonable price, thus we're able to offer it here.
A major frustration for me personally is when I find a very desirable item only to see it would cost me quite bit more than I would want to sell it for. Frankly, if this token cost me $400 it would be pointless to purchase it--because I would not be comfortable selling it for even that amount. I never use as an approach, if I find something quite lovely such as this piece, simply to purchase it and add 10-20% as my selling price.
I ALWAYS base my decisions to buy based on what I feel would be a good price if I were a collector, and I've spent most of my life collecting to varying degrees. I base all of this on what I feel my customers would be comfortable paying. I always aim to provide what I sell to be BELOW typical market value...and what I feel is "right."
I believe (and believed when I had the opportunity to purchase this token) that I would be VERY happy as a collector to purchase this for $300+. I had the opportunity to purchase other high grade examples of this token....but not for less (my cost) than $400; so I waited and I was rewarded after looking for a BU example for about two years! I would expect to find more than one of you more than willing to grab it at $300. Just buying to resell can be a very arduous, frustrating and slow process. This sale took a very long time to reach the coming hour to open it!
